Not - 'Coals to Newcastle' - but 'BdP to France'.... 24-09-2010
We are honoured to be able to reserve our yearling Baudet du Poitou colt for la SABAUD, the French breed society set up to preserve the World's oldest documented equine breed and save it from extinction. The organised breeding programme they implemented has resulted in an increase in numbers from just a couple of dozen, to several hundred today.
The stud of Poitou Donkeys at Hamerton is one of the most important outside France. Help from individual breeders and members of la SABAUD and l'UPRa has been crucial in this project, and is very much appreciated.
Because his bloodline is so poorly represented there, 'Vagabond d'Hamerton' (born in July 2009) will soon be travelling to France to hopefully help in the future conservation of these endangered donkeys. We are delighted that an English donkey bred at Hamerton Donkey Stud will be going back to the breed's native country, having been chosen to contribute in this way.
